FITU deputies reach an agreement with imperialist and UN officials

Nicolas del Caño, deputy of the FITU, with activists, in Brussels at the event convened by officials from imperialist countries and the UN
From New SWP of Argentina
On April 22, 2026, Nicolás del Caño, a member of parliament for the Left and Workers' Front-Unity (FITU), met in Brussels with officials from the imperialist countries of the US, England, France, Germany, and Italy, as well as imperialist officials from the UN, at an event dubbed the "Global Sumud Parliamentarians' Congress." This event adopted the document "Brussels Declaration on State Responsibility and the Realization of Palestinian Self-Determination ," which establishes the policy of global imperialism toward Palestine based on the recognition of the State of Israel, the " two-state solution," and a policy toward the Palestinian people based solely on "humanitarian" charity. Del Caño's participation in the meeting with ministers, members of parliament, officials from imperialist countries, and high-ranking UN officials constitutes yet another serious capitulation by the FITU leadership, this time collaborating with imperialist sectors of capitalist governments and officials at an event whose main speakers and presenters were UN officials.
The policy of sharing an event with European imperialist officials and UN imperialist officials is a grave betrayal that warrants the immediate break of the FITU groups with Del Caño's group. But this is not going to happen, because the other FITU groups have exactly the same policy of sending militants onto the Global Sumud Flotilla and supporting the UN's imperialist undertaking aimed at establishing the UN's "humanitarian" policy toward Palestine, as you can read by clicking here. In any case, the fissures and crises that the FITU is experiencing today are not due to a debate about Palestine or imperialism, but because they are already fighting amongst themselves for positions on the lists for the 2027 elections, a fact expressed in the separate events they are organizing for May Day or the public letters exchanged between the leaders of the FITU groups and other electoral groups.
The FITU is following the call of the imperialist officials
The Brussels event was organized by imperialist officials who were the main speakers, as you can read by clicking here . The imperialist officials who spoke included UN Special Rapporteurs Francesca Albanese, Michael Fakhri, Pedro Arrojo-Agudo, and Surya Deva; ministers Erin Đerlek of Serbia and Sira Rego of Spain; and members of parliament from European imperialist parties such as Jeremy Corbyn of the UK, Rima Hassan and Manon Aubry of France, Marc Botenga of Belgium, Ana Miranda Paz and Irene Montero of Podemos in Spain, Annalisa Corrado and Cecilia Strada of the Democratic Party of Italy, Mariana Mortágua of the Left Bloc of Portugal, Carlo Sommaruga of Switzerland, and Greenpeace officials such as Fabien Rondal, among others.
What was a deputy from a self-proclaimed "Trotskyist" coalition like the FITU doing there? The leaders of these groups might argue that their deputies are constantly forced to share meetings with deputies from bourgeois parties in Parliament. The problem here is that this event wasn't a parliament, but a meeting established by agreement among imperialist political forces. It wasn't an organ of bourgeois democracy, but an imperialist event based on the political consensus of its participating forces. Did Del Caño raise his voice against the Brussels document? The FITU's media outlets haven't said a word about Del Caño repudiating the UN leaders or rejecting the document; on the contrary, they participated in a march with all of them through the streets of Brussels.
All of which leads us to another serious problem: Why do the leaders of the IUF (International Federation of Palestinian Unity) talk so much about and publish in their press outlets the policy of a "Free Palestine from the river to the sea" or " the destruction of the State of Israel ," but then their members of parliament participate in imperialist events like the flotilla or the Brussels summit, which have the opposite policy? What is the true policy of the IUF groups toward Palestine, the one they write in their press or the one they agree upon with UN officials? The Brussels event, and the document "Brussels Declaration on State Responsibility and the Realization of Palestinian Self-Determination," which you can read by clicking here, says not a word about the need to destroy the State of Israel. It says not a word about a "Free Palestine from the river to the sea . "
It doesn't say a word in repudiation of the "two-state" policy; in fact, it clearly establishes the "two-state" policy because it recognizes Israel's right to exist . It's a document with only one concern: establishing a humanitarian corridor to get food to Gaza—the typical imperialist hypocrisy of the ruling classes who are " horrified" by the massacres, torture, and murders suffered by the Palestinians. But they "repudiate" the Palestinian armed guerrilla movements and try to impose a "bourgeois pacifist" policy on them , a "charity" policy in the style of the Rotary Club, bringing them a piece of bread and some medicine while Zionism murders them. But this time, it's disguised as pro-Palestinian activism.
The FITU with the officials who created and defend Israel
The UN is an imperialist organization used by imperialist countries to manage the functioning of the global capitalist system. The UN created the State of Israel, which came into being through a UN resolution in 1947, and it is an institution that has committed serious crimes against humanity, such as endorsing NATO's invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan between 2001 and 2003. It is an organization that should have been dissolved, and its officials should be imprisoned for the crimes they have committed. But now we see the "Trotskyists" of the FITU boarding UN flotillas and participating in its events. What are these supposed "Trotskyists" like Del Caño doing sharing an event with UN officials, ministers from imperialist countries, and members of parliament from imperialist countries? The same thing that other FITU groups who put militants on the Global Sumud flotilla are doing: collaborating with imperialist policy toward Gaza. And in that way, betray the 3rd Intifada being carried out by the Palestinians, and the struggle of the peoples of the Middle East.
This policy of class collaboration is not unique to the FITU groups, but is shared by all groups on the global left, as you can read by clicking here . In Argentina, we are currently witnessing the collapse and political crisis of Milei's government, massively rejected by the working people due to the worsening living conditions of millions. This collapse is accompanied by a process of political radicalization and a leftward shift among mass sectors, which they are trying to channel electorally through figures like Kicillof, the governor of Buenos Aires, who was invited to the "progressive summit" in Barcelona to receive the blessing of capitalist governments like Lula of Brazil and Sánchez of Spain. Another example is the media push for Myriam Bregman's candidacy within the FITU. The country's ruling classes, alarmed by this growing popular support, fear an uprising or insurrection that would put an end to Milei and are trying to contain the process within the electoral trap of capitalist "democracy."
And what is the core of the "Trotskyist" groups' politics within the FITU? Fighting over positions by bringing forward the 2027 elections, even though they're still a year and a half away. That's why they're fighting and holding two separate events for May Day. That's why they're exchanging letters, proposing all sorts of nonsense about a "workers' movement," a "broad party with diverse tendencies," "expanding the front," or "shrinking the front," and a whole series of debates about whether or not the FITU should have a "vocation for power" —all a complete charade to hide the fact that their only interest is seeing what positions they can occupy, taking advantage of the "electoral winds" that are coming, and how best to advance their careers as officials. Meanwhile, at European events, they're telling imperialist officials not to be afraid, that they too can coexist with and be part of the system.
The workers and the people will never come to power through elections. We leave those empty promises and false illusions to the reformists of the FITU and their cronies who lie to the people. While they fight over positions on the ballots, they rush to buy plane tickets to attend events convened by UN officials. From the New PST and La Marx Argentina, we propose turning our backs on the FITU leaders, their betrayals, and their electoralism, in order to build a revolutionary tool. The coming period, marked by Milei's downfall, will once again be marked by the same old debate: reform vs. revolution. But this time, we revolutionaries have an alternative to build in the battle for an Argentinazo, one that will establish a workers' and people's government. We invite you to join us in building this alternative to face the exciting events ahead, turning our backs on the old reformist projects.
