Long live the Latino uprising in the United States!

La Marx United States

On Friday, June 6, 2025, when ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) forces arrested 44 immigrants in the Los Angeles area, United States, the people erupted. Thousands of protesters took to the streets against the ICE raid at Home Depot, Paramount, in Los Angeles, California, provoking a confrontation that has lasted several days between the working class community and the police and military forces that respond to Donald Trump and seek to enforce the orders of ICE. Paramount is a working-class city in Los Angeles County, with more than 54,000 residents.

More than 1,000 protesters stood in front of the federal immigration detention center located in downtown Los Angeles, and went to the City Hall headquarters to reject the military. Under the slogans "ICE (immigration police) out of our communities" and "If they come for one, they will come for all," were some of the banners that could be seen between flags of the United States, Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador. The clashes took place on Alondra Boulevard, in front of the Paramount business center.

Democratic Mayor Karen Bass ordered the deployment of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) deployed to close the I-710 overpass in an attempt to isolate the ongoing protest. Los Angeles County is the most populous county in the United States, with nearly 10 million residents, of whom more than 3.4 million were born outside the country. More than 220 languages are spoken in the county, generating about 3.5 percent of the total U.S. gross domestic product, the most of any county. 300 soldiers were sent to protect federal installations and personnel, equipped with helmets, camouflage uniforms and weaponry, who joined the internal security, but despite the repressive effort, the mobilizations continued and intensified. Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, confirmed that Washington activated 2,000 soldiers stationed in the state.

Federal agents have fired thousands of tear gas canisters across the neighborhood, blanketing the area with white clouds of smoke that are forcing residents to evacuate their homes. Several people have suffered serious injuries due to tear gas and rubber bullets fired by officers. Despite the spicy smoke, protesters continue to denounce ICE, which led to clashes that have been going on for several days between protesters and agents. Protesters, community members and reporters responded by gathering in the store's parking lot, and then it continued to grow into the largest demonstrations in decades.

Los Angeles police declared the rally near City Hall an "illegal gathering," alleging that some protesters threw concrete, bottles and other objects at police. After two days of protests, the Donald Trump administration decided to intervene against the mobilizations by sending the National Guard, which guarded the Metropolitan Detention Center. The clashes worsened. Protesters on Alondra Boulevard tried to stop a white U.S. Marshals Service bus from crossing the overpass, prompting a confrontation with Department of Homeland Security agents.

In South Los Angeles, a demonstration took place at 15th Street and Santa Fe Avenue in response to the arrest of Ambiance Apparel workers. Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers set up a skirmish line and riot police attacked the crowd. But the raids quickly sparked protests that reached about 500 people, who gathered outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Federal Building. However, the fight that is taking place in California is national. In San Diego on May 30, more than 100 residents came out to oppose an ICE operation targeting a local Italian restaurant. ICE and HSI agents resorted to explosive grenades in an attempt to disperse the crowd, but were instead ejected by residents and restaurant workers.

On June 4, 2025, more than 100 people tried to stop ICE agents from kidnapping 12 people who were detained while they were appearing for an immigration court hearing. The presence of the crowd prompted the deployment of dozens of Chicago police officers to the area. At one point, protesters tried to block the van that sought to make the migrants disappear. On June 5, 2025, in Minnesota, a similar scene unfolded when thugs from the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) carried out a federal operation at Las Cuatro Milpas, a restaurant on East Lake Street that uses the slogan "Make tacos, not walls."

The struggle is part of the revolution in the U.S. 21st century

The uprising and the struggle of immigrants is part of a decades-long struggle by Latinos for their rights in the United States. However, not only the Republican Party, as it does now with the government of Donald Trump, attacked the rights of immigrants, but also the Democratic Party has raided them, for example, with Democratic President Bill Clinton, who, in the 1990s, led the militarization of the border and the criminalization of undocumented immigrants. Or with the Democratic administration of Barack Obama that deported more people than any other president in U.S. history, while Vice President Kamala Harris said the phrase that became famous to migrants in 2021: "Don't come."

On the other hand, the Latino uprising in California is part of the 3rd global revolutionary wave that we are experiencing that began in 2022 with the triumph of Ukrainian militias against Putin's invasion in the battle of Kiev. This revolutionary wave includes the 3rd Palestinian Intifada, the Syrian revolution, the Rojava revolution, the Houthi revolution in Yemen, the Chachmir revolution, the Sri Lankan revolution, the mobilizations against Macron in France, the workers' strikes in Europe, the struggle of the searching mothers and the national strike of the CNTE in Mexico, the uprising against Maduro's dictatorship in Venezuela, against the dictatorship of Díaz Canel in Cuba, among other processes. If you want to read more about the 3rd revolutionary wave click here.

However, the entire revolutionary process that the world is experiencing and has been developing since 2011 until today has the United States as its epicenter and beginning. That is why we call it the American revolution of the 21st century." This whole process began when, after the attacks on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, the Bush administration launched a strategy that consisted of a global political approach, economic and military counteroffensive whose slogan was the "war on terror" and the defeat of the "axis of evil", called the "Project Strategy for a New American Century" (PNAC), through which it sought to overcome the serious crisis opened to capitalism in the year 2000 and pull the economy out of recession. To achieve this goal, they launched a major military operation in the Middle East, and to avert the opposition of the American people by taking advantage of the impact of the 9/11 terrorist attack to establish a profoundly undemocratic regime within the United States based on the Patriot Act.

The regime sought to limit democratic freedoms. expression of the workers and people of the United States and to silence any voice, ade facto constitutional reform, which placed the military and security services at the center of the U.S. political regime. In parallel, a political-military offensive that was articulated around NATO and the military coalition that carried out the invasion of Iraq in 2003. But the counteroffensive of the PNAC and the NATO armies suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the urban guerrilla war that meant the national liberation struggle of the people of Iraq and the Middle East, a defeat that opened the Pentagon crisis. Part of the mobilization of the American people against PNAC was the historic mobilization of Latinos on May 1, 2006, which led to the defeat of PNAC, the crisis of the Bush administration,

The military defeat combined with the bursting of the "sub-prime" bubble, a crisis in capitalism in the years 2007/08 led to the bankruptcy of Global Corporations and Wall Street. The bankruptcy was so serious that imperialism usedbailouts to save the bankers. But after the withdrawal of the NATO armies that began in 2010, the 1st global revolutionary wave broke out in the Middle East that included the Arab Spring, the general strikes in Greece, the Indignados movement in Spain, etc. In the United States, "anti-capitalism" exploded with the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement, the mass movement with its epicenter in the youth that exploded throughout the country, occupying squares in states, counties, and cities in protest.

Although the Occupy movement was dominated by autonomist and petty-bourgeois anarchist ideology, and student ideology showed that a global revolutionary situation was opening up with the triumph of the Fourth American Revolution. This new situation gave rise to another movement with global impact such as Black Lives Matter (BLM) that quickly spread throughout the country and also became global. The struggle of the African-American American community swept away other sectors of the masses such as Latinos, immigrants, and workers developing alliances with other oppressed sectors, recalling the tradition of mutual aid between blacks, the LGBTQ community, recalling the struggle of the Black Panthers, Malcolm X, or Martin Luther King.

The "Front Line of Immigrants" in California

This struggle coincided with the global revolution of women around the world and an extraordinary movement emerged in the United States in October 2017 to denounce sexual assault and sexual harassment, following allegations of sexual abuse against American film producer and executive Harvey Weinstein, which was called the #Me Too movementor that it began among women workers in the Hollywood industry, and expanded to the music industry, science, academia, workplaces, politics, etc. But along with these movements began the "New Unionism" movement, the rebirth of the phenomenon of unionization, and the emergence of thousands of new and young union leaders, a process that developed from 2021. ́

This movement had some of its most important milestones the strikes against the bosses of the multinational food company Kellogg's in October 2021, In the triumph of Amazon workers in Staten Island, Amazon's only fulfillment center in New York, Starbucks of Buffalo decided to use the tactics contained in the manual of the radical historical Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). At the same time, all this resurgence and advance of the labor movement is a refutation of the theory of the "fragmentation" of the working class, and like all the movements that emerged in the United States as part of the Fourth American Revolution, it has expanded internationally. forming itself as a global movement. Women, African-Americans, queer and trans activists are at the forefront of this movement and unlike the labor movement

The Fourth American Revolution has provoked an enormous shift to the left in the consciousness of sectors of the masses. By combining processes such as the defeat of imperialism, and the military defeat of NATO at the hands of a National Liberation movement, the outbreak of the acute peak of the crisis of capitalism, the collapse of the Corporations, the successive "crashes" of Wall Street, the Bailouts of the oligarchy of the 1%, the exacerbation of global social inequality, triggering movements such as Occupy Wall Street, Black Lives Matter, the #Me Too Movement, as well as the "New Unionism", all these phenomena combined have caused "a turn to the left" of a global nature. This whole process results in the politicization of thousands of young people, and activists who organize these new unions and movements while advancing in their consciousness which has caused Marxism to become attractive again, and fringes of activism begin to look for a revolutionary Marxist alternative. To prevent all this comrade of leaders that emerges from joining Marxist or revolutionary currents, the Democratic Party has given itself a policy of "recruitment" and containment, with the formation of "left wings" of the imperialist Democratic Party such as Senator Bernie Sanders, the DSA (Democratic Socialist of America) or Jacobin Magazine.

These sectors make strenuous efforts to organize all this new activism that emerges and win them over to reformism, social democracy or a policy of class collaboration with capitalist sectors, a policy that also has the collaboration of the Communist Party of the United States, which precipitated a battle for the awareness of global activism objective for which the Progressive International was founded on May 11, 2020 under the leadership of Bernie Sanders and Yanis Varoufakis, leader of Syriza in Greece.

The crisis of the treacherous bourgeois and imperialist parties had already opened the crisis of bourgeois democracy with giant numbers of citizens abstaining: More than 80 million Americans who refused to support the imperialist Democratic and Republican parties in the 2020 presidential elections, a number that grew to 126,079,794 millions of Americans who refused to vote for Democratic and Republican candidates in the 2022 midterm elections. These figures show the crisis of American bourgeois democracy, which is no "democracy" at all, and the crisis of the old imperialist Democratic and Republican parties, responsible for the hunger, poverty and cruel inequality suffered by millions in the United States. The crisis of the traditional parties express itself in the higher abstention, and the Biden's defeat in the last elections caused by the collapse of the Democratic Party.

Long live the struggle of Latinos in the United States!

The global impact of the processes that have been taking place since 2011 in the United States constitute an expression of the Fourth American Revolution of the 21st Century, which means that due to the control that the Global Corporations of the United States have been excluded. From the United States of the global economy as a whole, all the countries and inhabitants of the world are part of the Fourth American Revolution. In fact, the Fourth American Revolution is a particular conformation that has reached the Theory of Permanent Revolution formulated by Leon Trotsky for the twenty-first century.

The Fourth American Revolution of the 21st Century will give rise to new social and political phenomena that will be added to those we are experiencing. From La Marx International we support the struggle of Latinos and all oppressed minorities At the same time, we fight to attract those leaders and activists who emerge in the movements incubated in the Fourth American Revolution of the 21st Century to Marxism, in the task of the International Reagroupment of Revolutionaries to end capitalism once and for all. and impose Global Socialism.
